Stoma Travel Guide: Navigating flying with Confidence

Travelling with your stoma can present some challenges, but with the right preparation you can navigate flying with confidence. Here is a travel guide to make your trip more comfortable and stress free.

  1. Plan ahead: Contact your local airport or the airline to discuss further how they can help with any concerns you might have. If it’s your first time flying it may be possible to have a “walk through” security at a quiet time in the days or weeks before you fly in order to help alleviate any concerns, you may have.
  2. Security: If you are stopped at security, Inform the staff that you have a stoma and ask to be searched in private if that would make you more comfortable. They are trained to handle such situations discreetly and respectfully. We would strongly recommend that you always carry a travel certificate with you. You can show this to the security staff to describe your condition should it be required. Click here to download a pdf copy of our sister company, Respond, Travel Certificate.
  3. Packing: Carry an ample supply of your stoma products, including pouches, seals and any other accessories you may need. Airplane bathrooms are small, you may consider a drainable pouch rather than having to do a full change on board. You can sample our range of drainable pouches, seals and accessories here.
  4. Hydration: Air travel can be dehydrating, so it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which can affect your stoma output.
  5. Comfort during the flight: Consider booking an aisle seat, which will provide easier access to the toilet facilities. Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing to avoid unnecessary pressure on your stoma, especially for a long-haul flight.

By planning and taking necessary precautions, you can enjoy your air travel experience with confidence and peace of mind. If you have any concerns or questions before flying consult with your stoma care nurse for further guidance.
